Wheelspace Temperatures in Gas Turbine
KRManish, These kinds of issues boil down to trending--what are the differentials doing over time? Are they increasing quickly, or slowly? Since there are two T/Cs in each wheelspace, are both increasing or is only one of them increasing? If only one of the T/Cs is increasing, is it in the...

GE 9FA Gas Fuel Purge System
niazbibiyana, Thanks very much! The resolution of the drawing is not very good; when I zoom in the drawing the print is too grainy to be able to read it (it's very small print for such a large drawing). Also, there is only one page of the set; it seems there are three pages, total, in the...

GE 9FA Gas Fuel Purge System
niazbibiyana, The pressure drop across the combustion liner is somewhere in the range of approximately 2-4%, so if CPD was 225 psig the pressure inside the combustion liner would be between 216 - and 220.5 psig.

GE 9FA Gas Fuel Purge System
niazbibiyana, You're welcome. And thank you for the feedback. I'm not very familiar with DLN 2.0 or any of its variants; it was a version which wasn't produced for very long before the change to 2.6, and (fortunately) I never had to work on any 2.0-equipped units. I had a course on DLN 2.0...

GE MARK V Not Starting after Shutdown
I agree with glenmorangie--there was too little information provided to be of help, and the information provided was not clear. I suppose "gas leaks" could be "air leaks" (since, technically, air is a gas). But it would have been most helpful if the original poster had told us what fuel the...

GE 9FA Gas Fuel Purge System
niazbibiyana, The answer to this question--and to many questions--lies in reviewing and analyzing the P&IDs for the various systems. When one is trying to understand these kinds of questions it's always best to refer to the P&IDs. In fact, every operator and technician should have their own...

Balaurugan1983, Thanks for the feedback! (You can also click on the Thumbs Up or Thumbs Down icon of any post or reply, though if you click on Thumbs Down it would be nice to know why you didn't find the information/post helpful.) As for the Gas Fuel P&ID (which I'd like to see), I don't...

Rotor Earth Fault Relay
Hello sudamadhav, Yes. Generally, the method of earth fault detection for a battery charger is very different from the method used for earth fault detection on a rotating generator field. To be certain about how the equipment at your site works, you'll need to consult the manuals for the...

Loss of Excitation on 10 MW Turbo Power Generator
bkarim55, A PMG usually generates an AC voltage that is fed to the "AVR" which rectifies and controls the amount of DC voltage applied to a stationary field which then produces AC on a rotating armature on the shaft which is fed to a rotating diode wheel which produces DC which is applied to...

Bleed valve function
Since rotor cooling air generally comes from some area of the axial compressor discharge, then it's likely that too little air is entering or being allowed to flow through the rotor--and that means overall unit efficiency won't likely suffer much. But the rotor can experience problems because of...

Gas Turbine Vibration Limits
Velocity--or "seismic"--vibration pick-ups are typically mounted on bearing housing caps (with the exception of the #2 bearing seismic pick-up on GE-design Frame 7E/EA and Fram 9E heavy duty gas turbines (which are mounted on the #2 bearing drain pipe which is securely bolted to the #2 bearing...

FSR Split & DLN Split
Balaurugan, FSR (Fuel Stroke Reference) is another way of expressing total fuel flow-rate reference--in percent. For gas fuel, if one maintains a constant pressure upstream of a GCV (Gas Control Valve) the flow through that valve is more proportional to stroke, or valve travel, or valve...

GE Mark VI: Alarms and TRE files
Kevin, I believe the original intent of the .tre files was to allow modifications like you have described, and even more involved modifications without the need to have a person sit in front of a computer with Toolbox to make them. However, as is the case with many such "features" (on lots of...

Bleed valve function
Axial compressor bleed valves allow a low-pressure path for air to flow "out" of the axial compressor when it might otherwise cause stalling and/or surging (which are exactly what they sound like--air can't flow from one stage of compression to the next and the axial compressor wants to stop...

Controlling the Speed of Hydro Turbine
Roy Matson, Good questions--both. I'm not extremely knowledgeable in hydro turbine operation and application. I think the answer to the first question is a function of the design of both the turbine and the generator and the type and size (diameter and length) of the inlet "pipe@ (which...

GE Mark VI: Alarms and TRE files
Kevin, It's been done with mixed results. It's not common, and--as always--good backups are extremely important. It's usually done by factory requisition engineers and sometimes shipped to the field--but it's not the preferred method of making modifications. One needs to be absolutely certain...

Balaurugan, What was the FSR at the time you recorded the values? You say you are new to the 7FA.05. Do you have experience with other gas turbines? If so, what manufacturer/model? Have you had a look at the P&IDs for the unit--particularly the Gas Fuel system?

Frame 5 Aux. Lube Oil Pump Pressure Issue
FSE1988, I must have not been thinking very hard.... Sorry. The Main L.O. Pump is usually a positive displaceent pump, and GE and most packagers of GE-design heavy duty gas turbines use relief valves to control the discharge pressure of the Main L.O. Pump. If I didn't suggest to check that...
