Nuisance tripping of RCCB

Hi guys,

I work in hotel industry & guest rooms are protected by RCCBs. However some RCCBs occasionally trip at random.

No abnormalities are found in the electrical circuits protected by these RCCBs. I presume they are exhibiting NUISANCE TRIPPING phenomenon.

Could you guys please throw some light on this problem of nuisance tripping of RCCBs?

(P.S. I wonder what would be Phil's comments on this.)

Thanks & Regards,

Dear Shahvir,

First I assumed there is any leakage in a certain location such as: feeder wire and load. So, we have to decide where is the leakage location. The leakage is possible between phase and ground (earthing) or between neutral wire and earthing.

To investigate it, we have to separate both feeder and load, then conduct measurement by meggering respectively.

Second, what is the weather condition during RCCB nuisance tripped. This information is required to find out the possibility of nuisance trip due to indirect lightning strike or direct strike on remote area.

Third, miswiring on earthing system.

Fourth, bad RCCB if it is happened on the same feeder.

I hope it will help you.

Dear Rasam,

How do you define a bad RCCB? Could you please list factors contributing to a bad RCCB?

Thanks & Regards,
Shahvir
