Festo Launches Latest in Life Science Automation Solutions

February 18, 2024 by Damond Goodwin

Festo has developed new life science automation solutions, including a flexible pipetting system. The system is designed to deliver wide-range pipette dispensing from 20 microliters to 20 milliliters.

Festo, a leading electromechanical and pneumatic systems manufacturer, has announced its latest automated life science developments, including a flexible pipetting solution. The system automates pipetting, with volumes from 20 μl to 20 ml.

Flexible Pipetting Solution

The pipetting solution is part of Festo's LifeTech division's new solutions. The pipetting system can transport volumes from 20 μl to 20 ml. The system's accuracy gives users a wide range of applications and possibilities for integration into their processes. The pipetting volumes can be adjusted through one or two methods, either through text-based inputs on an HMI or through an Ethernet connection and standard Ethernet protocols.

DHOE Pipette Head

The first featured additional component of the pipette system is the DHOE open loop pipette head. It is capable of transporting extremely small units down to 1 μl. It can achieve extreme precision, ensuring that one system is capable of multiple functions with the addition of the appropriate components. The DHOE is chemically resistant, making it able to accommodate different liquid types, including those of varying viscosities.

PGVA Controller

In addition to the DHOE, Festo has added another component for increased versatility, the PGVA pipetting and dispensing controller. The PGVA functions as a compact solution for users without compressed air. The controller can distribute air pressure to multiple pipette heads from a single unit. Industry-leading piezoelectric-based valves ensure the unit operates with precision.

EXCL Gantry Robot

Festo also launched the second development of its EXCL gantry robot designed for life sciences. EXCL allows for three axes of motion in the X, Y, and Z planes. Additionally, there are eight individually controlled Z-axis planes. Multiple Z-axes give customers more flexibility, and the number of axes can be chosen to fit individual needs. The latest EXCL gantry robot comes in component form and can be assembled in hours.

Liquid Dosing and Dispensing

Festo’s liquid dosing and liquid dispensing system also make up the company’s LifeTech offerings. The liquid dosing system can aspirate liquid droplets from two bulk wells into two microwells when necessary. After filling the liquids, they can be aspirated away in a bulk transfer. A pipette tip replacement is then automatically completed.

In addition, liquid dispensing of small volumes is possible through the VYKA media-separated valve. Heat transfer to the media is reduced due to precisely timed, quick valve movements from the hit-and-hold current reduction circuits in a VAEM valve controller.
