Third Dimension Noncontact Gauging Solution Now Available for Fanuc Cobots

April 12, 2024 by Damond Goodwin

Fanuc's CRX collaborative robots can now be integrated with Third Dimension's peripheral device, Vectro2, a plug-and-play noncontact gauging solution for metrology and process control.

Third Dimension, a company that specializes in delivering innovative metrology solutions, now offers a peripheral device for Fanuc’s series of CRX collaborative robots. The product, Vectro2, is an End of Arm Tool (EOAT) designed for Fanuc’s CRX cobots. The solution gives users the ability to automate metrology and process control operations for 2D profile measurements and quality assurance.

Vectro2 Noncontact Gauging Solution

Third Dimension’s Vectro2 noncontact gauging solution is capable of measuring a multitude of different surfaces, including gap and flush, edge, radius, chamfer, angle, and other less common scenarios. The noncontact gauge opens up new possibilities for manufacturers looking for an easy-to-integrate solution for automated metrology solutions. The system works as an ideal tool for Fanuc’s CRX series of collaborative robots

For an intuitive user experience, users can integrate Vectro2 functionality into a teach pendant tablet. The initial programming of the Vectro2 was designed for simplicity so users can drag and drop commands directly from the teach pendant when programming. In the teach pendant screen, users move the ‘Measure’ icon into the program timeline. After adding the measure icon to the timeline, a dropdown list can be consulted to select the desired tool.

Robotic Inspection and Measurement

Quality control and product inspection are a common source of error in manufacturing processes. Missed problem products can lead to expensive issues downstream, resulting in expensive warranty calls or costly product reworking. Third Dimension looks to help reduce or eliminate this problem with the Vectro2.

The Vectro2 is designed to provide users with repeatable and traceable quality control, helping to eliminate costly errors in the quality control department for 2D applications. Robots' repeatability and reliability for quality inspection processes should help manufacturers better inspect welds, adhesive beads, panel gaps, edge breaks, and more. The addition of automated quality control also manages to free up skilled labor for more useful, less tedious tasks around the manufacturing environment.
