loop checking

I have been assigned to check our loop system in the commissioning process for an Exxon mobile project with natural gas.

[email protected].

If you can point me to some helpful sites that would help a lot. I have 22 years electrical experience. 10 of which is industrial but limited to the electrical distribution.

Sure - hire experience Instrument Techs

The difference between being an experienced electrician and an experienced Instrument Technician is as different as night and day.

Dear Kenny,

You don't have to search internet or elsewhere. Exxon Mobil's own Engineering Guide is reasonably useful for your requirement.

You can refer to the following:

1. Exxon Engineering Guide, G 1514011, Inspection and Testing of Instrument.

2. Exxon Engineering Guide, G 1514012, Instrument Calibration
The exception that the said guide does not address the Loop Checking Method Statements and the Inspection Formats, those you will have to prepare depending on the type of instruments that need to loop checked.

Secondly, While loop checking it is always better to bifurcate the job in two parts, a Cold Loop Check (CLC) and a subsequent Hot loop Check (HLC). The former is without application of (loop) power from the BPCS (Basic Process Control System) while the latter is with powering and energization of BPCS. CLC will be faster with the daily progress quite high, but HLC will yield much slower progress, as all the loop components (both physical and virtual), displays, set points, Operator Messages, Loop Interconnections need to be checked.

I would suggest the following books:

On loop checking:

http://www.isa.org/Template.cfm?Section=Books3&template=/Ecommerce/ProductDisplay.cfm&ProductID=7580

On start-up:

http://www.isa.org/Template.cfm?Section=Online&Template=/Ecommerce/ProductDisplay.cfm&ProductID=2946

On calibration:

http://www.isa.org/Template.cfm?Section=Books3&template=/Ecommerce/ProductDisplay.cfm&ProductID=7577

and my favorite on troubleshooting, since I wrote it

http://www.isa.org/Template.cfm?Section=Books&template=/Ecommerce/ProductDisplay.cfm&ProductID=8307

There are also standards by ISA and IEC:

ISA 105 , Commissioning, Loop Checks, and Factory & Site Acceptance/Integration Tests for Industrial Automation Systems

http://www.isa.org/MSTemplate.cfm?MicrositeID=1423&CommitteeID=7176
IEC 62382, Electrical and instrumentation loop check

The first 3 links go to the ISA site but produce "page not found" errors. Without a title, it's hard to search for whatever was recommended.

Which titles were suggested?

All the links I used were use my me successfully before I pasted the links in the e-mail, however, now I can get to the site from Google but when I paste that URL and try it, I get site not found. Weird. Anyway try these links.

The forum software keeps putting spaces in the links. Its irritating and annoying and a bug that's been there for some time.

Remove any spaces from the link when you paste it into the browser.
