My laptop is hooked up to our office lan wirelessly. I want to connect a VSD ethernet device to my laptop so that I can then see the device elsewhere in my network. Is this possible? I have been playing with IP addresses with no luck so far.
You are confused. Just because a device is connected with Ethernet does not mean is also uses TCP/IP protocol that is necessary to communicate with a PC via IP addresses.
In fact, most industrial Ethernet connected VSDs do NOT use TCP or UDP/IP so that they cannot be connected as you want. The most common Ethernet connection for VSDs is PROFInet, but Rockwell VSDs use Ethernet/IP. Call the supplier of your VSD and find out the right way to connect via Ethernet.
