How does RS232 hardware handshake really work?
Jan Axelson explains handshaking (from her book Serial Port Complete, 2nd edition) With flow control, a transmitting computer can indicate when it has data to send, and a receiving computer can indicate when it’s ready to receive data. The computers in a serial link should use flow control...

How does RS232 hardware handshake really work?
Wikipedia has a pretty good explanation of handshaking. The complexities of communication over telephone lines through modems (recognizing a dial tone, ring indicator, carrier detect, dialing, hook pick-up) and the limitations on buffer size in an era of costly memory is why handshaking...

ModScan64 error message: "MODBUS message TIME-OUT"
There's about 50 things that can be wrong. I can't find the Max 50 on the English version of the web site (one has to know all the product categories, which I don't, and I can't find a search function.) So, here's some RS-485 issues that are commonly encountered: 1. Without seeing the...

Bench Test Panel for Different Thermocouples
Check the manual and spec again. The spec sheet for the 2204E says that it has "Universal Inputs" including milliamp input. The conventional understanding of the term "Universal Inputs" is that one input type from the many available input types is selected in the configuration and the...

Pressure sensor to measure frequency conversion water pumps
Probably like any VFD controlled pump application. Matching the transmitter output signal to what the drive's process variable input needs, 2-wire or 3-wire technology, power supply compatability, process connection, environmental rating, electrical connection style, pressure range, materials...

Repairing Endress & Hauser Cerabar PMC731 Pressure transmitter with Error 110
I'll speculate that if the failure is the electronics card with the 4-20mA/HART, Profibus or Foundation Fieldbus communications, then I'd guess that near lightning strikes take out the electronics due to long cable runs' ability to pickup induced voltage from the lightning. But it's speculation.

HART Communicator does not connect with transmitter
Udshread recalls the minimum spec properly: 10Vdc at the terminals, as confirmed by the Rosemount DVC6200 spec sheet: https://www.emerson.com/documents/automation/Product-Bulletin-FIELDVUE-DVC6200-Digital-Valve-Controller-en-123336.pdf

Trouble shooting for an ultrasonic flow meter
For decades, clamp-on ultrasonic was the domain of several major players, but some break through in technology brought dozens of secondary players to the market in the early-mid 2000's. They all do it their own way. This sounds like one way of doing "fault" condition. The negative -999999...

HART Communicator does not connect with transmitter
As I read your assessment, it appears that the DVC works independently (outside of) the bad-boy loop, right? I'm not sure what your 6.3Vdc reading is, or why the - to ground Ohms-out at 92K ohms, but you seem to be OK with that. So what non-run-of-the-mill thing is going on? I/S barrier? I am...

Trouble shooting for an ultrasonic flow meter
in-line sensors or clamp-on sensors? Transit time or doppler technology? What does "huge" mean? What's an example of normal vs "huge" flow? Negative means reverse flow. Do you only see 'negative flow' when the system is not running and is supposed to be turned off?

Remote RTD-Extend RTD to transmitter
RTD’s use copper conductors, so any cable with copper conductors of the same gauge/size is suitable.

Where to find standard documents?
RS-485 According to Wikipedia, the RS- was replace by EIA-, which has since been replaced by TIA-. So your search term has to be EIA-485 standard. Standards are sold by vendors, usually as pdf or paper, your choice. You can buy the TIA-EIA-485 spec here...

Mark Ve RTD issue - 13 and 29 Reading Falsely Low
Well, I learned two things today - GE grounds the lead wire compensation sense conductor on a 3-wire RTD and the element sense cables are twisted pair, not triads. Gee Golly Whiz, it is a big wide world out there. Obviously it works when wired properly and has for decades; it just isn't...

Mark Ve RTD issue - 13 and 29 Reading Falsely Low
An RTD circuit works because the AI card pumps a constant current through the floating, ungrounded resistance of the RTD and then measures the voltage drop (Ohms Law) across the RTD resistance. No wire in a 2-wire, 3-wire or 4-wire RTD sensing circuit is grounded. Ever. The shield (or...
