RTD or Thermocouple for Bearing Temperature
The classic very thin Platinum wire wound around a ceramic mandrel did not hold up well in vibration. But I've MgO thermocouples break in vibration, too. But I honestly do not know whether the thin film RTD element RTD's are better in vibration or not.

Selecting a Transmitter
Some thoughts Commodity items can be purchased based on quotes for price, availability, and delivery times because they're commodities: six of one, half dozen of another. If what you're buying is not a commodity item, you're not really buying the 'thing'. You're entering into a relationship...

Alarm System for Monitoring a Pond
For the data collection and SMS end, Google "datalogger" and make some calls. What you describe has to be a commercial package by now.

Building a Yokogawa CENTUM CS3000 from Parts
What sets the whole category of DCS control apart from the category of PLC control is the DCS reliance on a central database which runs on "THE SERVER". From comments on the forum here over the years, it appears that the DCS software is pretty fussy about exactly what kind of server box it...

Interfacing PLC and SCADA
SCADA is generic term for a class of software packages for data collection and supervisory operations, like changing an alarm setpoint. There is development software that provides the tools to: - configure and make a communications connection to the field device - select which data is...

HMI interface with RTU
HMI's do not use I/O to get their data, an HMI reads digital data or has digital data written to it via an industrial comm protocol. When reading or writing digital values via industrial protocols, one either gets the correct number or a communications error. Incomplete or error flagged...

Submersible Level Sensor
A Hazardous location is an area where flammable liquids, gases or vapors or combustible dusts exist in sufficient quantities to produce an explosion or fire. The vapor space above the liquid in a tank of gasoline is a hazardous area. I'm not sure what sea dust is, but a tank of water is...

PLC and 3X Register Communication
Any alternative other than a PLC, Red Lion's Data Station Plus. Red Lion's Data Station Plus is a configurable protocol converter. Although I've never used one, by all appearances, as a master it can read a 3xxxx input register, put the value in a 4xxxx register and your master can read the...

Confusion in defining calibration range
Are you aware that an RTD is calibrated on 'paper' only; there is no means of adjusting the output an RTD? The RTD calibration certificate tells you how much error the RTD had at the given calibration points. Whatever error occurs at a given temperature is faithfully replicated by the...

Niagara TCP for Schneider Ion 7750 Power Meter
I'm assuming the Generic Modbus tester is Modbus Master/Client and the Schneider Ion is a slave/server, so the Niagra is the Master/Client. I'm assuming that you can read the data, but the wrong data value is read, probably from an adjacent register, one higher or one lower. When...

Error Sending/Receiving HART commands (SFB52/53): "Faulty, Without Data"
Unfortunately I can only comment on the "250 ohm series resistor in the loop" issue. Your statement, 'but I'm getting these other variables' is on target - that fact that you can read variables says that there is sufficient loop resistance for the HART signal to develop. The input wiring...

Delta P Shut Off for Control Valve
Pressure is force/area. The area involved is the valve trim exposed to the force of the applied pressure. The actuator needs to overcome that force to move the plug/cage/ball/whatever.

Controlling a Induction Heating Power Unit
1. Resolution To get millivolt resolution on a 10.0V span, you need 10,000 counts, assuming the span is 10.0. A 14 bit unipolar A/D will provide 1 mV resolution with 16,384 counts. A 14 bit A/D with a sign bit will not quite make 10,000 parts, with ±8,192 parts, but might be close...

Configuring Altivar 12 Remotely Using Logic Inputs
Your assumption about using one digital output to get one of X fan speeds is not correct. That's not the way the drive works. The drive does have the capability for 4 preset speeds, but it does so using combinations of the binary states on its digital inputs, using 2 DI's for 4 speeds and...
