MK4 Fire Detection
cactus_chris, When a fire detector (Fenwal switch) is closed, it will be closed regardless of the polarity of the voltage applied to it. Changing the polarity of the applied voltage was a way of using the Mark IV contact inputs circuitry to detect the closure of a single fire detector, so as...

Mark 6 Flame Detector Configuration Parameters
M. Ali, I believe this is "legacy" (or, left-over) programming/configuration from early DLN-I days and Mark V control systems. There was the ability to program one rate for detecting "solid" flame (the high threshold, if I remember correctly), and another ability for preventing false flame...

Frame 6B GT Spread Issue
Dear JJss, I am repeating: It's extremely unusual for a GE-design Frame 6B heavy duty gas turbine NOT to cross-fire at FSNL when running on gas fuel. Extremely unusual. The IGVs are at minimum operating angle for rated speed, and this should not prevent flow through the cross-fire tubes on...

P2 Pressure Hunting
RKSGE, Hmmmm..... So, the oil was replaced. Was the reservoir cleaned when the previous oil was removed, and a flush of the lube oil and hydraulic systems performed with the clean oil? Or even with the dirty oil prior to replacement? Was any flushing of the oil systems/piping done when the...

Explosion While Replacing Generator's Hydrogen for CO2/Air
anonymous, > Any thoughts? I have a lot of thoughts; on this topic I have several. First, I don't have access to the hydrogen/CO2 P&IDs for the unit in questions, nor the GE instructions. So, I can't comment any more than what I already have on the subject of purging and charging. How...

Gas Turbine Break Away
manukmoni, It's meant the shaft acceleration from zero speed during starting. Since there is inertia to be overcome, which usually requires an extra bit of force to overcome when accelerating a shaft away from zero speed, the term "break away" is used--as in the force required for breaking...

Why We Take Two Phase of PT for Synchronization with Sychroscope
Devesh, The answer to the first question is pretty simple. It's adequate and it's less expensive than having the equipment (synchroscope and metering) to compare all three phases. The machines aren't going to change phases--and once the high voltage phasing and the PT measurement/feedback to...

Speedtronic Mark 4 Interface Module
Kingrosekhan, I've never thought of them as "interface modules" probably because they are all passive devices. They don't do anything more than change the signals to something that can be recognized (voltages in most cases; frequency in some; current in others) by the printed circuit cards...

Frame 6B GT Spread Issue
JJss, How long since the last maintenances outage? What was the most recent maintenance outage? Was it planned or unplanned (before the spread problem)? Again, when you removed the #3 fuel nozzle, was there any investigation of the nozzle to check for blockage? What is the range of...

Frame 6B GT Spread Issue
JJss, When the LVDT calibrations were "checked"--what was done? Were the LVDTs "re-calibrated"? Were the servo-valve(s) replaced? Another thing which happens on occasion is that the fuel nozzles which are installed are not direct matches for those being removed. This can cause flow...

Frame 6B GT Spread Issue
JJss, We presume the unit does not have DLN-I combustors. When did the spread problem begin--after a maintenance outage? After a trip from load? Did it gradually get worse? You seem to purposely mention that the unit was re-started on gas fuel. Does that mean it was being started/run on...

4-20ma Control Loop
Use a 4-20 mA signal isolator/signal conditioner designed for just this purpose. Many manufacturers make such isolators. Some cost as little as USD75.00--some even less (though I suspect one for this application will cost a little more). Write back to let us know what you choose and how it works!

Load Throw Due to Over Frequency
neeuor, I am not a power system engineer; I'm a lowly gas turbine controls technician/engineer. I can sympathize with your plight--it's unfortunately so common in your part of the world and your part of the world is recognized to have such market potential that I believe it's one of the...

Load Throw Due to Over Frequency
neeuor, What you're referring to as "throwing load" isn't the same as load shedding. And, you haven't said whether or not Pre-Selected Load Control was enabled and active on the two units at the time of the incident.... The time required for a Speedtronic turbine control system to return...

CSP File Modification in MARK V
RSKGE (interesting name; especially the last two characters....), Creating the CSP after modifying sequencing and adding I/O files is a completely separate and manual process from MK5MAKE.BAT and the EEPROM Downloader. The CSP.PRN file (and CSP_XREF.PRN) doesn't get downloaded to the Mark...

sb, There's no such thing as a dumb (or stupid) question--just a dumb (or stupid) answer. A former colleague of mine used to say that all the time, and it's true. (There may be a bad time to ask a question.... like when the unit is being started for the first or second time, or being started...

Load Throw Due to Over Frequency
neeuor, This discussion presumes the two GE-design Frame 6 heavy duty gas turbine-generators use Speedtronic turbine control systems. It also presumes when you say the GRID load "...remains around 4 MW...." that means that the two GTGs, when synchronized to the grid through a tie breaker (a...
