Moog Servo Valve Operation
Bruce Thompson, It's very ... scary to see the changes in personnel hired to operate and maintain power plants in the last three decades I have been working in the power generation industry. There are no more "apprenticeship" programs to speak of, and very few locales have certification...

Good Day Sir, What do the instructions provided by Fluke with your instrument, and available on the World Wide Web say? Does your Fluke have SOURCE and SIMULATE terminals for the leads to be plugged into? Please write back to let us know what you determine!

Velometer 5485C
Sadiya, You didn't say if you were measuring the voltage with the unit running or with the unit at rest or on cooldown (ratchet). No supply voltage is required when the turbine is running; they are self-powered. Magnets and coils and relative motion and induced emfs and all that weird...

Moog Servo Valve Operation
VK, Here is a link to a cutaway view of the internals of a Moog servo-valve on Page 4, Fig. 6, 'Jet Pipe Servovalve (1957): http://www.servovalve.com/technical/newtb_141.pdf That servo-valve in Fig. 6 is very similar to but not exactly like the Moog servo-valves used on GE-design...

pole position detection
nic, Thanks very much for the clarification. There are mechanical degrees and electrical degrees, and I try not to mix the two and sometimes get mixed up myself. I should really look at some references sometimes before I write these things. However, the concept of looking for rate of...

Turbine tripped due to False start drain high temp
kamel, Ah, so good to know that redundant RTDs were used to detect the temperature--which means there was, in fact, a "high" temperature in the piping. I would be grateful to know how the sensors are attached to the pipe or inserted into the pipe (in thermowells?). My best guess based on...

pole position detection
chandru, In some gas turbine-generator power plants the synchronous machine is used as a starting means (motor) to accelerate the shaft from zero speed to near synchronous speed, and then use the synchronous machine as a generator. This is done through the use of a device that can...

Turbine tripped due to False start drain high temp
Kamel, Was there a failure to ignite (or several) prior to the fired start? Without being able to see the P&IDs for the False Start Drain system for your site, we can't know which particular drain valve detected the high temperature. Are you saying that a single T/C or RTD (or...

GAS LEAK TEST 9FA DLN 2.6+
JP, It would seem from the information that you provided--and the information from MIKEVI--that L86GLTB is not for SRV leak, but for GCV leak. Again, without being able to see the sequencing/application code running in the Speedtronic panel at your site it's impossible to say for sure based...

Excitation Control
Kamel, You are welcome for whatever help I may have provided. I learn a LOT from contributing to control.com, and one of the things I learn is that a single description or answer doesn't work for everyone's question, even if the question is the same as someone else's question. So, have...

help with Q & A
Tim, Not being able to see the "test forms" to know what kind of detail is involved I can't really comment on that. I can only speak for a couple of power generation companies with ISO 9000/9001 certification. It's the intent of the procedures developed as part of the certification process...

Conversion of torque into amps in synchronous generator
Chandru, I'm not bored by questions. I, too, learn a GREAT deal from contributing to control.com. I worked with a colleague years ago who said, "I don't understand something until I can explain it to someone so they understand." And I've adopted the same philosophy. When I'm unable to find...

Conversion of torque into amps in synchronous generator
Chandru, I was thinking this was the case! This is one of several concepts you are going to have to grapple with in your own way and in your own mind. One knows it's true, it just seems that it shouldn't be true. When I was in university I used the library quite a lot for these kinds of...

Chandru, By the way, you are absolutely right to challenge anyone who ever tells you, "It just works that way," or, my favorite (NOT), "That's the way we've always done it!" Neither are good explanations or justifications for anything. Even if it's always been done that way, it...

GAS LEAK TEST 9FA DLN 2.6+
Hi, JP, Many people have been surprised to learn the gas leak test tests both GCV and SRV. The "S" in SRV stands for STOP, and in fuel stop valve. The gas valve leak test tests both the SRV and the GCV downstream of it (or at least it used to). A leaking SRV can cause problems...
