What advantage is there to use CCC (separately) to control anti-surge (data while be transferred to DCS) or to implement algorithm directly in the DCS (scan time is 250 ms)?

 

CCC as well as Triconix and others have algorithms to anticipate surge, thereby starting the control response in the least amount of time. If you have a lower power compressor that is fairly forgiving with respect to surge, you might be able to get by with less control sophistication and speed of response.

Distributed Control Systems can be configured for compressor control. However, there are several problems associated with such an implementation:

* Owing to the inherent slow response, the margin of safety has to be increased. This will lead to the recycle/blow down valve opening much earlier than required. The result is wastage of valuable energy.

* For a simple stand-alone compressor, DCS might be okay, though it will be sluggish. However, for a series/parallel network of compressors, a dedicated control system will save millions of dollars, depending on the throughput and the gas compressed.
