CSMA/CD - "No Carrier" when we use a switch instead of a hub

We want to connect a terminal (sample of a cellular phone emulator) with a PC via Ethernet.
The terminal can do 100Mbps interface and the PC-LAN-card can do 10 Mpbs.
In between we install the NetGear hub we got delivered from the terminal manufacturer.
Connection works fine.
When we replace this hub by a switch from NetGear or "get...Net" (brand name) the terminal reports via a serial monitoring interface always "No Carrier".
Both, hub and switches can cope with 10 and 100 Mbps on each port.
As far as I have learned a switch does the same job as a hub plus it´s switching specific qualities.
So then why this NoCarrier problem when we use a switch ?

Perhaps someone has already encountered the same problem and found an explanation ...

It should work. First be sure that the switch is powered. If there is power, is it the right voltage? Often hubs need no power but switches do. Make sure that you have not burned out the switch by using a US power supply on 230 volts. Second, most switches have LED indicators to show connection -- are they illuminated? Did you make your own cables from Cat 5 wire and connectors? Most times problems can be traced to faulty connections inside the RJ-45 connectors. Make sure you do NOT use a crossover cable with a switch.
