Expert System Inplementation w/ Modicon hardware Cimplicity HMI

How do I communicate from the Expert System directly to the PLC/HMI server? Do I need to write my own comm. drivers? Are there any compatibility issues between Cimplicity/Modicon that I should be aware before, or the Expert System is totally independant from hardware?
