Finding Transfer function from experimental data.

System modeling from sets of experimentally generated data could be tiresome especially when it is your first time of performing such an experiment to get the system transfer function. In other to design a good compensator, the plant's transfer function is required.
Any guidelines on how to obtain system transfer function from sets of experimentally determined data would be appreciated.
