Hi folks!,

we have a centrifugal compressors ,can somebody suggest the best control philosphy for running the compressor for better efficiency so that the surge is avoided and moter effiecieny is achived?

You should have a set of compressor curves from the manufacturer, these curse specify the range of operating conditions for which the compressor
should operate. The curves will also provide you with the "surge" line. You will want to keep the operation point at least 10% away from the
surge line.

Preventing surge is a matter of controlling the recycle valve using PID control to keep the operation point away from the surge line.

Surge occurs because the compressor cannot get enough gas on the intake side, which results in a "booming" sound coming from the compressor.
This can and eventually will cause damage. By opening the recycle valve you are putting more gas into the input stage therefore removing the
compressor out of the surge condition. If the gas flow into the compressor is low enough you will eventually get to the point where your just recycling gas, similar to startup.

However, the starting point is the curves from the manufacturer and they will have them for each model they make, and may even have them for
individual compressors.
