Can anyone tell me: what is the Pig Launcher and receiver and how it is used?

If you are launching other porcine you are on your own.

 

A PIG is a high tech device used to ascertain the condition of a underground gas line.

The PIG launcher/reciever stations are a specific location in the gas line designed to launch/receive the PIG.

Basically, you obtain a PIG; place it in the launching pipe and release it. It uses gas flow to move it through the pipe at a defined rate (so that it may obtain data). When it has reached it's destination, it is extracted from the PIG recieving station.

That's just one example. Are there any other ways to detect a pig? I've never had the need to do so.

 

A "pig" is a device that is inserted into a pipeline in order to clean the pipeline. It is inserted into the pipeline via a launcher and removed via a receiver.

It's called a pig because originally that was what was used... hopefully they killed the poor animal first!

Incidentally, when I was working in the Middle East they frowned upon calling them "pigs", preferring "spheres".
