PLC To Personal Computer Cable

Hi

I am new to all this. I have recently bought a Siemens S5 100 CPU and a PG 605 programmer to learn on. I'm looking to connect to my Personal Computer so I can make programs and save them to the PLC. The software I have is S5 for Windows, but it is in German language. It's a bit tricky to use and I was wondering if there is a text switch within the program or do I have to learn German? Also I purchased a Siemens PC/RS232 Converter cable, Siemens Part Number: 6ES5 734-1BD20. One end fits into the CPU okay (8 pins out of possible 14 used) but the other end has a "D" 25 pin female. I cannot find where to connect this plug on my computer. Would I use a standard 25 pin male to 9 pin female converter and connect to RS232 port, or do I need another Siemens part that connects the 25 pin female to my computer?

Thanks.

I have to deal with S5 every day, and it aint pretty. If you are just starting to learn plc's I would stay away from S5. In any case. What version of Step 5 do you have? An early version will have a startup screen to select languages. Later versions are installed with certain languages, and I believe you have to reinstall to get a different language. 100u's were not very reliable, unless you have a late model. Not sure about the PG. I have always used a PC for programming.

Hi

I don't think there is a facility to switch languages. As for the lead I have a PG740 and COM1 has a 25pin socket. Which use to communicate with our S5 PLCs. So I'm pretty sure a 25pin to 9pin convertor will work.

Hello!

To change the language of the STEP 5, you should go so de menu "Verwaltung" and then to "Sprachuswahl", there you can select the language of your choice between German, English, French, Spanish, Italian.

To use the cable you should buy a converter fron 25 pin to 9 pin (COM port) if your computer doesm't have a RS232 port you should buy a USB/RS232 converter.

Sincerely,

I do not know if it is possible to switch the language of the S5 app, but the converter for the serial port is enough. The cable from Siemens that you already have, does all that is needed in terms of signal conversion etc. between RS232 and the PLC's programmer port.
And even the 25-pin connector on most (old) PC's had only a few pins wired, so the 9-pin connector on todays PC's can supply all that is needed for the connection.

Good luck,
KR,

HI,
Just use a standars 25 to 9 pin converter, that's what i use, you can pick them up at any pc store.

Hello,
I don't know anything of the step5 windows program, i work only with the original STEP5 which is working for all Windows versions and where i can program everything with without any exceptions.

The cable you mentioned is a V.24(RS232) to TTY cable. You can use a standard converter from 9pin to 25pin, these are standard to buy and inexpensive.

best regards,
Lowiek

You should call the S5 Hotline for questions on the 100U or other S5. S5 for Windows is a non-Siemens product. Step 5 is Siemens software. These are two different packages entirely.
