I tried to install Speedtronic MK V software on a PC Pentium 3 (or P2), why won't the software run? When I install and run the software, I always get the message "Unable to read global section". Does anyone have a solution for me?

Normally, when IDOS says it is unable to read the global section it means it can't find the unit-specific files where it expects to find them *and/or* the wrong AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files are loaded *and/or* someone is trying to use an extended memory manager to speed up IDOS.

IDOS does its own memory management, thank you, very much. It will not run with a memory manager like HIMEM.SYS or QEMM386; it maps memory as it needs to and will choke if any other application tries to access the "lower" 640K of RAM. So, if you have any memory manager running from CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT, delete it.

You will find in C:\IDP\DATA an AUTOEXEC.BAT file and a CONFIG.SYS file for use in attempting to configure a PC to run IDOS. In AUTOEXEC.BAT there are two SUBSTitute command lines to set up the F: and G: drives, which is where IDOS expects to find the unit-specific files. I believe the directory structure is documented in the Mark V Maintenance Manual, GEH-5980. You need to create the proper directories on the C: drive, and then when the PC is booted/re-booted with the proper AUTOEXEC.BAT file making the proper drive substitutions, IDOS will try to find the unit-specific files in F:\UNIT1, or whatever directory was specified for the unit files in F:\CONFIG.DAT.

The proper files need to be in F:\UNIT1; including UNITDATA.DAT, ENUMDATA.DAT, SCLEDATA.DAT; I think the list is also in the Maintenance Manual.

You didn't say if you had an ARCnet card in the PC. If you don't, I think you'll need to comment out the line in C:\IDP\EXEC\RUN_IDP.BAT which loads the ARCnet driver. I think the executable is ARCDRIVE.EXE, so put a couple of colons at the beginning of that line to skip loading the ARCnet driver, because if it doesn't find an ARCnet card, it will not finish loading IDOS (usually).

If you have an ARCnet card, you need to make sure the proper ARCnet card is "enabled" in C:\IDP\ARCNET.DAT. Look at the card and those in the file, and make sure the lines for the proper card are uncommented and comment out any lines for a card which is not in the machine.

That should be about all. The proper AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files must be executed during start-up. The right files need to be in the right directories. The right drive letter substitutions need to be made. If there is no ARCnet card, the ARCnet driver should not be loaded (of course, it can't talk to a Mark V, but you can do everything you want with displays and such). If there is an ARCnet card, the right ARCnet card must be "enabled" in ARCNET.DAT.

The last thing, which you might (should) have learned from using the 'search' feature of control.com (which is second to none, and accepts multiple word search terms!) is that IDOS will not run on just any PC. IDOS was written for specific BIOS chips/software, and if it doesn't like the BIOS which is installed on the computer, it might hang during the execution of RUN_IDP.BAT or at any time after that. I think it's also kind of picky about RAM; I don't think it likes really fast RAM or DDRAM or any of the newer RAM memory modules. It remaps interrupts, so sometimes it can't find the ARCnet card if it's in a slot that can only use certain interrupts. It works with most serial and PS/2 mice, but can't used a USB mouse unless it's connected through a USB-PS/2 adapter. And, sometimes (quite often) the cursor will jump across the screen any time you touch it, but will work just fine until you've not used the mouse for some period of time, and then it will jump across the screen the next time you touch it.

I don't think it likes P4 chips very much, either. I've never had any luck getting it to run on anything but a plain vanilla Pentium P4, and even that took some doing (a couple days, on and off), and I can't remember exactly what made it work, though it was definitely some BIOS setting change or combination of changes. And even then, sometimes it would just hang for no apparent reason. I think the BIOS wasn't one of those that IDOS liked very much. And, trying to run it on a Pentium Core2 Duo or QuadCore processor, forget it. I think the limitation there is MS-DOS (which runs in the background when IDOS is running).

i have the same problem after working for a lot time. i replaced the SD Ram With Less Memory Ram It worked. it loaded to the main display, but i still have 2 problems.

first i have a serial mouse (not trackball); it didn't work. i think it is a driver problem.

the second thing is the Arcnet Card. who know how to Configure Arcnet Card? and can i put another Coxial Network card? and how to program it. please help!
