EX2K connection and questions

Hello to all,

I have a few questions regarding EX2K excitation equipment:

1) I want to connect to the EX2K and I have a toolkit version V10.02.15C (Build 3470) Release 10. How could I know if I can connect to the EX2K’s we have? 2 of them are static excitation from 2003 and the other 2 are Brushless excitation from 2001 and 2002.

2) How can I know if the EX2K has an analog input for a PSS input signal? We need to install PSS to the excitations because of grid regulations.

3) Can I connect with a regular series cable or it is some special cable?

4) If someone have some training or some information I will really appreciate.

Best Regards
Jose

Dear Jose,

I would suggest you review the EX2K manuals GEH-6120 and GEH-6121. If you do not have these manuals then I suggest joining GE Controls Connect where these manuals and many more are available.

You should be able to connect to the EX2K with toolbox without using an external cable depending on the setup at your site.

I have never heard of using an Analog input for PSS regulation. The EX2K should already have internal algorithms for PSS regulation that just need to be activated and tuned with the gain values according to your machine and grid situation.

This type of modification is not usually done without the help of an excitation specialist familiar with the EX2K. Tuning of the PSS is usually done in combination with a grid system evaluation.
Sorry I can't offer more advice or training materials. What you are attempting to do is fairly high level work and the EX2K is not the most intuitive system to work on.

Thanks for the information. Is it possible to send me those manuals by email? I cannot find them on the GE page.

On the other hand, do you know if I want to make a step response through the ASPO input? Which amount of voltage I will need for a 1% step?

Best Regards,
Jose

Dear Jose,

sorry but I cannot send the manuals by email. On the Controls Connect site I just entered 6120 into the search bar and the manual came right up.

For the step response I just use the EX2K front panel in parameter mirror mode. EE3781 which is the ASP@EX variable is used to introduce a step. by using the mirror mode I point EE3781 to EE70. In the case of the EE 200 counts is equal to a 1% step. I can then change the value of EE70 to introduce and remove the step for testing.
I assume in your case you are trying to use the analog input and variable 552 to introduce a step into the summing junction of the AVR reference. Unfortunately I do not know the resolution of this signal and therefore the amount of voltage needed to introduce the needed step for testing.

I'm sorry I can't be of further help at this point.
