I need to know if GE Toolbox 8.1 will run on Windows XP Pro or Vista? The old PC needs upgrading and I need to know if I need to upgrade GE Toolbox 8.1 also. GE Toolbox 8.1 is communication with a Mark VI Simplex controller.

Toolbox 8.1 is fine on Windows XP. On Vista... maybe. You have to have to install and run it in Admin mode and compatibility mode, and it won't install at all on a 64-bit OS. Vista isn't officially supported, so buyer beware. GE has pulled Toolbox 11.6 and other eTCSS tools into ControlST 4.2 and later, so it can be installed on Vista/Win7 and 64-bit machines, but if you're stuck on Toolbox 8.1 you're limited to older OSes. Now, if you need CIMPLICITY, that is a whole different nightmare...

Can you clarify this, please? Will Toolbox 8.1 work on WinXP, or not?

Thanks!

On further reflection this needs more clarification anyway. :) I forgot most people say "Toolbox" and really mean the entire eTCSS suite--TCI, SDB Server, etc. Toolbox 8.1 (eTCSS 1.3) works on XP, but not TCI and several other components, and you have to run the installer in Win2k compatibility mode (right click on the setup.exe, click properties, select the Compatibility tab and enable run in compatibility mode for Windows 2000).

I just installed eTCSS V01.03.08 (ToolboxST V08.01.27C) on an XP machine and played with it a while to make sure I'm not totally off base. There are oddities, like the .wri files used for release notes not opening anymore (Microsoft disabled the whole file format in XP rather than bother to fix security holes in it).

Offical XP support in eTCSS didn't come around until V03.02.00/Toolbox V10.01.02 or higher.
