Hall Effect Sensor as Paintball Micro Switch

I would like to put a 3-pronged hall effect sensor in the trigger frame of my paintball gun. I would like it to trip at 70 gauss. What problems might I have? Does anyone know where I could get HES to work for this? Thanks.

Hi

Not sure if your after a switching type hall, increase on magnetic strength or magnetostrictive type. You need to simply search hall sensors on the web as the types and applications are vast. Start with the links on this site at the page bottom.

Since you have the magnet picked – my guess would be you are counting activations so why not use a tiny battery, as weight is an issue, and a reed switch?

HAS – is that a power control of some type?

A latching Hall sensor would do the trick if the magnet is mounted so that when the trigger is pulled both the N and S pole of the magnet pass over the Hall Sensor. (So that when you pull the trigger the N pole is last past the sensor so it will latch on) Then when the trigger is released the N pole goes past the sensor followed by the S pole so the sensor latches off.

Hall sensors come in many types:

As an alternative (Which would probably be even lighter & cheaper and easier to source) is to use an optical switch.

Just putting bit of metal or black plastic between the slots will turn the transistor off.
You can find these in old floppy disk drives and it is more likely to be at your local electronics shop or surplus store.
