I suspect a lot of your compatriots would disagree :)

You and I might be able to read English reasonably, but most people can't. That's why i18n is so important - because most people *can't* read English to any useful degree. Assuming that they can badly skews your world-view.

Jiri,

I would not totally agree with this statement. It depends on where. In engineering positions, most people in European countries do speak english (except for France), especially younger engineers. Maybe technicians and workers on the factory floor do not speak english good engough. For Asian countries, Afrika and southern Amerika, I do not know. The trend seems to be the same in all countries, the english language becomes what Latin was 2000 years before to a certain extent.

Clarification: In fact, the French CAN speak English, but they refuse to because it's an inferior language.

Not in the technical business. You simply won't survive your next trade show or even your next development project without being able to speak
English. Customers are coming from all over the world, as automation is a very international business. And most of the documentation (i.e. data
sheets for chips etc) is in english as well. I don't know of any automation developer who isn't able to read, write and speak English.

Anyway - hey, it's a good oportunity to improve language skills :)
