Can somebody shed some light on how to restore an Idos to a new HDD from its backup disc. I tried different ways and am ending up with a message while booting up the new HDD...

"c:\>G:\EXEC\MENU
Unable to read system global section"

If you are "restoring" IDOS and a unit-specific application to a hew hard disk drive you need to have the same AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files in the root of the C: drive. MS-DOS needs to be installed in the C:\DOS directory, and the directory structure outlined in the Mark V Maintenance Manual, GEH-5980, needs to be created and populated with the files from the old drive.

It's difficult to tell exactly what's wrong from the information you provided, but at the command prompt you listed it seems that there is no G: drive? Or there is no information in the G:\EXEC directory?

F: and G: drives are psuedo drives--they are created using the SUBST command in the boot-up files (AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS). The directories have to be created from the C: drive, and then have to be populated with the proper files, and then the computer re-started and the SUBSTitutions will be made and if the proper files are found in the proper directories the boot-up will be successful.

Again, it's not really clear what you have done and how you are re-installing "IDOS" to a new hard drive. The process should be that you have the back-up information from the old hard drive (the F: and G: drive directories/files), and a copy of MS-DOS. Install MS-DOS, create the proper directory structure as shown in GEH-5980. There should be a proper AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS in G:\DATA (C:\IDP\EXEC) which can be copied to the root of C: drive.
