Technology has been an integral part of each stage of manufacturing in India from the planning of the future, to resource planning, to production, thereafter getting into distribution and reaching the end customer. The entire value chain is made automated on an ERP system. The increasing application of mobility solutions is adding the agility and flexibility to the whole process chain. This has already begun happening in India, especially in the private sector. There is enough automation in every segment going on. Technologies like mobile and analytics have been embraced by many industries in the last couple of years.

Technology is a one of the key factors that is going to be instrumental in transforming Prime Minister's "Make in India" vision to make India a global manufacturing hub into reality. Industries across the spectrum have now started adopting technology in, be it completely or partially. India's prominent position in software engineering is an asset for the purpose of harnessing advanced manufacturing for small and medium enterprises. The SMEs would benefit by adoption of Advanced Manufacturing Technologies (AMTs) that would enable them to enhance quality, operational, organizational and financial performances, in a cost-competitive manner.

While organisations have already moved in their use of technology, from within enterprise integrated functioning to extended enterprise integration (with vendors and customers), many of them are now trying to build more flexibility for rapid response and changes in the scale of operations. The ability to respond to changes in demand patterns due to shorter product lifecycles, larger variety and increased customisation options is resulting in the need for higher flexibility across the entire supply chain and not just core manufacturing. Technology is playing a crucial role in defining the boundaries of this flexibility right from sensing the changes in demand signals to the ability to promise a definitive supply date to customers to decisions of what, when and where to manufacture as well as source.
