VERY Simple Security Monitoring System

I'm working on a simple security monitoring system for a high school assignment. All I basically need are simple suggestions for how to set up the Visual Basic interface. Basically it should accept input from switches and activate a camera to record at certain times. If nothing else, I would really appreciate a link to a good VB Tutorial, especially for interacting with other programs.
