Whitepaper Overview

As encoders with built-in commutation functionality are becoming more and more common, there has been a push to shrink the package size.

Having commutation included in the encoder has several benefits, including:

  • Reducing hard motor costs by removing the hall boards and reducing the magnet volume from the motor
  • Decreasing the motor fabrication time
  • Reducing the number of cables/conductors mating the motor assembly to the drive

With bearingless commutating encoders, there are still a wide variety of specifications to consider, including: sensing technology, permissible operating environment, electrical interfacing as well as mechanical packaging.
