Synchronizing Two Generators of 1800RPM Speed and 1200RPM Speed
Rukevwe... The simple answer is yes. But, first insure that the existing switch-gear fault-duty (especially ground-fault) is not exceeded with the CAT gen-set connected to it, while the others are operating. Regards, Phil Corso

Ancillary Service (area regulation) Using Battery Energy Storage vs Pumped Hydro vs Gas Turbine
Miquel... obtain a copy of the May, 2015 issue of "Power Magazine", pages 22-25. It contains an article titled, "Batteries Are Carving Out Space on the Grid" revealing Southern California Edison's (SEC) installation of a 260 MW storage-resource. It uses Li-Ion Batteries and will cover about...

Ancillary Service (area regulation) Using Battery Energy Storage vs Pumped Hydro vs Gas Turbine
Miguel, the copy of the "Gortz" study I obtained lacked specifics. I believe, however, the "doubling" effect is related to a principle, thought to be possible in the 1980s. It was tried during development of a DC power source for the "Rail-Gun" (also called "Space-Gun" and "Smart-Rock")...

Ancillary Service (area regulation) Using Battery Energy Storage vs Pumped Hydro vs Gas Turbine
Miguel, kWhr is the unit of energy provided by a battery! Can you reveal the technical reference (literature/source) claiming "a study indicated that a battery energy storage can double its nameplate capacity when providing regulation service..." Regards, Phil

Ancillary Service (area regulation) Using Battery Energy Storage vs Pumped Hydro vs Gas Turbine
Miguel, your query is not simple to answer. As a start, I suggest you obtain the 2012 study by The Global Energy Institute (GENI), authored by Andreas Oberhofer. He has shown that there is no clear winner amongst the 3 technologies you are comparing. For example, while the highest efficiency...

Two Relay Contacts Connecting In Series To Increase Contact Life Cycle
Ak... your subject, double-break contacts, was covered in a May, 1999, Control.Com thread. Unfortunately it is no longer archived, so here is a synopsis: In general an improvement can be realized! But only because of the randomness associated with which contact opens first. I know of only one...

Flame Detector Voting Query
Assylbekm... Yes, 2 of 6 is a legitimate logic term. M of N voting has many applications! Nuke's use a 2 of 4 strategy. Even supplied a 3 of 75 SIS system some years ago! Regards, Phil Corso

Motor Negative Sequence Impedance and Current
Amrit... Apples and oranges! Acceleration, or run-up, or starting time, is in the order of seconds! In fact, acceleration of typical-design motors (say < 1,000 Hp, < 6-pole) is under 2 seconds! On the other hand, unbalanced operation can persist for months or years! The proof is...

Motor Negative Sequence Impedance and Current
Amrit... Answer to your 'Motor-Start' question: No! Unless the supply is unbalanced Neg-Seq current is not present! Answer to your 'Running Motor' question: No! Neg-Seq current is not higher in amplitude than Pos-Seq current. Instead, double-frequency eddy-current are made to flow in...

Motor Negative Sequence Impedance and Current
Amrit - Both locked-rotor current (as related to the number of starts) and unbalanced-supply voltage affect life expectancy! However, it's my view that sustained UV operation is more dangerous because the effect is not readily observed! Can you provide more detail on your comment...

Reversing a Delta-to-Delta Transformer
Sparky: If I have interpreted your dilemma correctly, you are trying to feed a 480V, 3-ph, delta-connected load from a 240V, mid-phase-grounded (Hi-Leg) power supply! The interposing Xfmr is Delta-Delta, wired as hi-leg, but the X4 terminal (presumably used as the mid-phase ground...

Regulating the Exciter Voltage During Start of High Inrush Motor
Alsibub, inrush usually relates to current and MVA, never MW. What are the actual nameplate parameters of: 1) Generators; MW, kV, A, and Pf? 2) Motors; MW, kV, A, and LRA/FLA ratio (Locked-Rotor-Amperes to Full-Load-Amperes)? Regards, Phil Corso
