Transformer Differential Relay Protection during Open-Phase
Pandc, I just learned of a solution by ALSTOM. It uses an optically-coupled current-sensor to monitor the Xmfr's no-load current. It was proven by a collaborative effort between ASTHOM and FP&L, in Florida. Phil Corso

Increasing Excitation of an Isolated Alternator Feeding a Resistive Load
Shahvirb, you may be aware that some posters to this forum get upset when formulae are used. If not, would you mind if I started with a typical generator, i.e., stator, rotor, exciter? Rehards, Phil

Increasing Excitation of an Isolated Alternator Feeding a Resistive Load
Shahvirb... I suggest you specifically investigate how synchronizing-power, synchronous-reactance, and armature-resistance, all affect performance of paralleled alternators. Regards, Phil Corso

Fluctuation of Generator Parameters During Low Demand Period
Makban... in order to reduce the amount of verbage, thus far committed to this thread, why not forward some measured operating values. For example, I suggest V, A, MW, MVAr, MVA, Field V&I, temp, etc, comparing the troublesome-unit to a properly operating-unit. Regards, Phil Corso

Brushless Capacitor Excited Alternator
Engineer... Are you referring to an Induction-Generator? Such a generator would require capacitors if it was in operation while isolated from a source of Reactive VAr. Regards, Phil Corso

Lightning on the Gridline
Raul, protection is provided by installation of surge arresters on the gen'r side of the grid-xfmr! Typically, one set is located at the LV-terminals of the Grid-Xfmr, and a second set of special (expressly for machine-protection) at or nearer to the generator(s) terminals! If connection...

Loadsharing / Reactive Power Problem
Further to my earlier post... prioritize your investigation. First, concentrate on data-collection. Then, corroborate that CT secondary-circuit leads are correctly phased. Lastly (and least)... although possible, the probability of an error in rotor-current measurement is nil.

Loadsharing / Reactive Power Problem
Tharris... kVAr imbalance can be solved using parameter values. It's simple approach, but take real work. A world of information can be gained from numberology. I found that Comparative Analysis usually leads to the solution. Hence, my usual first step is to request 'data'. Returning to...

Tharris... the reason for the 30% difference in kVAr can be found in the following Control.Com thread: http://www.control.com/thread/1419896241, "The Physics of Tap-Change." Specifically, read the Jan-08 post. When applied to your case, it illustrates that lagging-kVAr is produced when...
