About Pull-Up and Pull-Down Resistors

We are using pull-up and pull-down resistors in all our hardware circuitry. The only one factor that I understand is that, when used in conjunction with microcontrollers, it helps in defining the high or low state. Otherwise it does not explain anything to me.

Sankavi,

I think you almost answered your own question.

A pull up resistor ensures the signal goes high when the open collector or sinking device turns off.

A pull down resistor ensures the signal goes low when the sourcing device turns off.
