Is there an advantage of using CompactLogix for utility control systems (e.g. boiler controls) over using PCS7?

 

The only simple advantage is that Siemens supports Profibus on CPU, which can be advantageous for interfacing with Sensors, burners etc. But you can do Profibus on CompactLogix with an interface card... Really depend on what you are comfortable programming and what you have licenses for.

CompactLogix (Bradley) can be expensive for License Seats.

A Compactlogix is a PLC/PAC, and any comparisons should be to another PLC, a Siemens S7-1500 for example.
If you are looking at DCS systems, you should compare a Siemens PCS 7 to a Rockwell PlatPax system, for example.
