Analog signals over long distance

I have an application where I need to run a 4-20mA signal over a cable route of around 1000m. I wondered if anyone can guide me by their experience of this.

What kind of cable did you use? Was your application successful?

4-20mA can easily cover this distance. Run shielded, twisted pair, 18 gauge cable.

We've found that 1000m is a distance where wireless should be considered, given the cost of trenching for a cable. But wireless still assumes a source of power at the far end to power the transmitter, because the battery in a battery powered radio is not intended to power an instrument, although there are solar battery packs available for remote power sourcing.
