The Conitel protocol was developed long before there were UARTs and microprocessors. It is not an asynchronous byte oriented protocol. Each Conitel "word" consists of two 12 bit "sections" and a 5 bit BCH error check word and two bits of "control" There were several versions of Conitel.

How to replace the conitel protocol with Modbus protocol. I have been surprised to know that Allen-Bradly PLCs used conitel protocol.
