Can an explosion proof motor with a rating of class one, gas group d and temperature rating T3B be installed in a zone one area? This area happens to be the shell shakers on a semi sub.

of course you can use group d equipment in zone 1 and zone 2. These are flame proof equipment which are designed for zone 1.

 

Be very careful in what you say regarding Flameproof Motors.
No 1 because it is Eex d rated yes it can be used in a Zone 1 area, however you must ensure the Gas Group is suitable and I do not recognise group "D" normally it would be IIA -IIB - or IIC have you taken down the Certification details correctly?

I would imagine it should look something like.EEx d IIA T1 G/D this is suitable for use in a Zone 1 area with Methane Gas (Natural gas not mining) that's the IIA The T1 covers the max surface temp and it is suitable for 450 Deg C. The G signifies it can be used in Gas and the D signifies it can be used in Dust.

No 2 For me the Shell Shakers area should be certified as above EEx d IIA T1 G.

You have not specified what the motor label says. You have just specified the Class (refers to flammable gases or vapors being present) and the Group D refers to the kinds of the gases and vapors that are present.

One more parameter is the Division (in North American terminology) that tells us how long such flammable vapors or gases would be present. The Zone that you refer to is an IEC/European terminology that corresponds to the Division of North American terminology.
Generally, if you are using a North American manufactured motor that is labeled or certified as suitable for Division 1, it can be used in Zone 1.

 

You are right Sandy that the equipment selection can't be done only on the basis of type of equipment the area in which the equipment should must be studied properly. That what kind of explosive metarial is present there.eg if corbon di sulpied is present in some area its ignition temprature is to low so the suitable equipment for use in that area is that have T6 surface temperature.
