flow meter process condition

Dear Experts,

Need of yours guidance to choose suitable flow meter. Process condition:

Fluid: Water||Operating pressure: 400 to 1500 PSI
||Operating Temperature:75Deg.C (Max)||Flow range: 150 CM/Hr (Max)||Line size: 4"
||Battery operated required for remote area operation||

Already we are using turbine flow meter but not able to measure at low range. (in non-linear range). Looking for meters without moving part like EMF meter. (Battery operated EMF meter by KROHNE WATERFLUX3070 looks suitable but operating pressure only 160BAR).

Thanks in Advance,
RK

Siemens has a portable battery powered clamp-on ultrasonic flow meter for which pressure is not an issue because a clamp-on flow meter is not invasive, all of it stays outside the pipe.

I don't know what sort of battery life one can expect. What are your expectations for remote monitoring? 2 hours? 2 days? 2 weeks? Permanent installation?

How are you going to fetch the data?

David

Dear RK,

When you say that the existing meter (turbine) could not measure the "low end", what is the minimum flow rate you are trying to measure? 1500PSI max pressure means the flow meter would require a 900# ANSI rating. I ran a preliminary flow calculation using a 4" sch 80 pipe (assumed) and an averaging pitot (no moving parts) produces roughly 115" H2O of DP. An estimated operating range with a DP meter like this would be 10 or 11-1 in flow (down to 12 to 15 M3/H at the minimum end. An averaging pitot with 900# flanges (1/2" hole drilled in pipe) could be used with a low voltage (battery powered) DP transmitter (spanned 0-115"), but David's questions (prior post)are also important.

Dear Mr.David,

1. We need battery operated rate totalizer/Flow meter to monitor instantaneous flow rate and accumulated flow on daily basis to calculate how much water injected in reservoir. Due to wide area of installation, practically not possible to run electrical power supply cable.

2. Flow meters need to install permanently.

An accuracy chart over a range of flow velocities is shown on Page 7 of the data sheet below, so you can determine how applicable the technology might be.

http://www.automation.siemens.com/w...ct/sitransf_fus_clampon_systeminfo_fi01en.pdf

Any flow meter that uses battery power is likely to need some form of solar power to keep the batteries charged in a permanent installation. That data sheet does not list the power requirements for the Siemens flow meter.

Magmeters provide good low flow measurement as well, so you might trade off the installation costs of clamp-on vs installation in a pipe and relative solar requirements to keep the battery charged.

No, there's a whole sub-genre of battery operated meters designed for long term service like this. Signet, Seametrics, Badger Meter and many more. They are usually either paddle wheel or turbine meters, and most of them have lousy low end. Seametrics (I worked there as Director of Marketing and Sales until 2000) uses jeweled bearings and non-magnetic pickups which improve the low end response dramatically, and they make an insertion turbine meter that is really quite good.

Many AWWA style turbine meters (which have excellent turn down) can be equipped with battery operated dataloggers and indicators that will operate for 3-5 years on the battery.

Good luck,

Dear Mr.Walt Boyes,

Thanks for your response. I checked seametrics products and it looks to be matching our requirement, but the main problem is pressure. We use high pressure (500 to 1500 PSI) for injection. I prefer battery powered magnetic flow meters (Like AG 1000/2000) but pressure criteria does not match our requirement. What to do?

Thanks,
RK

You could try FTI (Flow Technology Inc.) they do a lot of sub sea meters and high pressure meters with pulse output so battery powered totalisers should be OK. Try them and see.

For Battery operated flow meter, Krohne Waterflux 2070,3070 are best and recommended by many companies.

Also your process pressure is in range calculate it.
