New ABB 500 X Sensor Targets Harsh pH and ORP Applications
Built for demanding processes, ABB’s 500 X sensor resists fouling and provides real-time data through EZLink connectivity.
ABB recently introduced the 500 X pH/ORP sensor, designed to deliver reliable measurement in harsh industrial environments where conventional sensors often fail. Featuring a durable electrode design and integration with the EZLink digital platform, the sensor enables simplified installation and real-time access to performance data. Engineered to resist fouling and reference poisoning, the 500 X aims to extend sensor life and improve process stability across applications such as water treatment, chemical processing, and marine systems.

500 X Sensor Designed for Extreme Operating Conditions
Accurate pH and ORP measurements are important in industries such as water treatment, chemical manufacturing, and marine systems. But sensors in these settings often face extreme heat, aggressive pH, high pressure, and chemical buildup, which can cause reference poisoning, where contaminants damage the electrode. As a result, measurements may drift, and sensors can fail quickly, sometimes in just hours or days.
The 500 X sensor is designed for environments where standard pH/ORP sensors struggle. The sensor uses a special electrode that resists both reference poisoning and fouling, two common causes of sensor failure. It can handle high temperatures, pressure, and harsh chemicals. ABB also notes that customer trials showed the 500 X sensor stayed stable longer than standard models.
According to Nik Siwek, ABB’s Global Product Manager for continuous Water Analysis, the sensor is based on ABB’s proven TB electrode technology and now has digital features that make setup and use easier.
Digital Connectivity Through the EZLink Platform
The 500 X sensor connects directly to ABB transmitters via the EZLink digital platform, using a simple connect-and-measure method. When used with the AWT424 transmitter, users can view real-time data, sensor health, and configuration details. The EZLink Connect mobile app lets technicians access this information from a smartphone, making setup and maintenance easier. The platform also allows for software updates and sensor management without complex steps.

ABB’s Expanded pH and ORP Sensor Portfolio
The 500 X sensor is part of ABB’s broader range of pH and ORP measurement devices for various process needs. The 100 Series, which includes the 100E, 100GP, and 100 ULTRA, is often used in drinking water, wastewater treatment, aquaculture, and irrigation. These entry-level sensors are designed for routine conditions and prioritize affordability and reliability.
The 500 Series, including the 500 X and 500 PRO, is built for tough industrial and marine environments where sensors are exposed to extreme heat, fouling, and corrosive conditions. These sensors use ABB’s most durable electrode design, making them ideal when reliability under stress is critical.
ABB’s 700 Series is made for specialized measurement needs. The 700 ULTRA is a rechargeable sensor designed for very precise readings in low connectivity environments, making it ideal for high-purity water systems and other applications that require exact chemical control.
The new sensing solutions feature easy-to-identify color-coded design systems that map each sensor to a specific application. A range of universal accessories supports installation across different process environments.
Supporting Industry Productivity and Efficiency
As the need for accurate pH and ORP measurement grows, new sensors must perform well in harsh conditions without contaminants damaging the electrodes. By making the 500 series sensors more durable and adding digital features, ABB’s solution aims to help operators reduce maintenance and maintain reliable process control.
