HMI height standards

Is there a standard height for an operator display? This is an 8 inch panel for a standing operator application.

Stevan,

I think if you put it at the height of a pay phone or walkup ATM machine, you'll be in pretty good company. I imagine the people who've built those have already spent much research dollars on the proper height. You don't mention if you have operator input (keyboard or touch panel) as well, which these do, the absence of which might give you more leeway.

If it's in the vicinity of the operation or process being monitored, you probably would also like to have it situated such that the operator can look past the display to the process without turning around, for instance.

ISA has some standards regarding control rooms. ISA-RP60.3-1985, "Human Engineering for Control Systems" is an example.

There are some ISO standards which you can find at:

http://www.iso.ch/iso/en/stdsdevelo...mitteeStandardsList?COMMID=3904&INCLUDESC=YES

(you will need to paste together the URL above to get it to work)

9.3.2a Height of fixed VDT (floor to centerline of monitor) should range from 52" to 58".

4.2 VISUAL REQUIREMENTS FOR OPERATOR CONTROLS
FIG. 4.2
"Standing eye sight (zero line) is assumed to be 62" above standing floor level."

It depends upon a few factors:

- Is this for standing person using as a View Screen Only or is it a Touch Screen for Operator entry of data?

View screen - Center line 5 feet
Touch Screen - Center line 4 - 4.5 feet

-Is this for "Public Access" to include disabled, wheel chair accessibility?
Consider Center line 3- 4 feet
