I'd like to install an open guard lamp in a motor starter circuit but was wondering about the legality of powering the lamp through the contractor coil winding when the contractor is de-energized.

In an ideal world each guard switch would be a double pole so one could use a separate circuit and be able to identify which switch was open but that is not the case here.

Any online resources that show typical wiring diagrams for such circuits?

I would use a safety relay, connecting the switches to it, and having one of it's outputs drive the coil and another the indicator.
