SCADA System Without Historian / Data Logging

Good day. I would like to ask if a SCADA System is required to have a Historian or Data Logging feature?

For example, the system has an HMI to poll real time data and issue controls and commands, Alarms Reporting and Sequence of Events Reporting but it doesn't have any features to record or log time stamped data to a database to be viewed later using charts/reporting tools.

Can this system be called a SCADA System?

In my opinion, no, what you describe is not SCADA because the implication of the DATA ACQUISTION portion of the name, SCADA (Supervisory Control And Data Acquisition) is the historian part.

But, marketing people will re-define a commonly accepted term without a second's hesitation.

The marketplace is always Caveat Emptor (Let the buyer beware).
