What does SIL2 rated PLC mean?
We would like to take a training course on the following IEC related subjects:
SIL: Safety Instrument Level (IEC61508, IEC61511)
Could you please recommend any training center (essentially in uk) that can deliver this training course?

SIL stands for Safety Integrity Level and is basically a measure the Probability of Failure under Demand (PFD) of some Safety Instrumented System (SIS) for each specific safety loop or Safety Instrumented Function (SIF).

A SIL 2 PLC means that this PLC is approved (Normally by TÜV or other agencies) to be used as part of a SIS where the Probability of Failure under Demand is within 1/100 and 1/1000.

The use of PLCs and other electronic systems for safety purposes is regulated by IEC-61508 and IEC-61511.

Hope this helps,

SIL stands for Safety Integrity Level and is a measure of the risk reduction provided by a safety related system (IEC-61508) or a safety instrumented system (SIS)(IEC-61511, ANSI/ISA-84.01). There are four discrete SIL levels in the IEC standards and three in the ANSI/ISA standard. A SIL 2 rated PLC is one that is approved by a third party for use in a SIL 2 system. Equipment itself does not have a SIL rating or approval (hence the approved for use in) because SIL is associated with a safety loop or safety instrumented function that consists of sensors, logic solver, and final elements. Past that, it is not too easy to give you the whole story in an e-mail posting.

The standards IEC-61508 (BS-16508 is, I believe, the UK version), which is the umbrella standard "Functional Safety of electrical/electronic/programmable electronic safety related systems" and IEC-61511 "Functional safety: Safety Instrumented Systems for the process industry sector", which is the sector standard for the process industries have the gory details. ANSI/ISA 84.01 "Application of Safety Instrumented Systems for the Process Industries" is the current U.S. standard, which is also used worldwide but will be replaced in the near future by IEC-61511.

For a brief overall picture, you might look at a couple of articles I wrote for CONTROL magazine called "The Complete Safety System" and "Safety Systems: From Past through the Future" which can be found at http://www.controlmagazine.com . Use the search function in the upper right corner and search for "mostia" and "safety."

There is also some books published by ISA, http://www.isa.org, (also available from Exida at http://www.exida.com along with some other publications in this area) - "Safety Integrity Level Selection -- Systematic Methods Including Layer of Protection Analysis" by Edward M. Marszal, P.E. & Dr. Eric W. Scharpf and "Safety Shutdown Systems: Design, Analysis, and Justification" by Paul Gruhn, PE and Harry L. Cheddie, P.E.

There are also a number of articles available at the Exida web site on this subject. There are also articles and papers available on the web on this subject (search under "safety integrity level" on http://www.Google.com and I'm sure other search engines too). ISA has had several symposiums on safety systems and have papers and symposium proceedings available at http://www.isa.org. There is also a ISA safety system division.

Exida provides on-line training in this area via the web and could provide training out of our office in München Germany. If you are interested, contact Rainer Faller at +49-89-49000547 or [email protected]
