Synchronizing the VSDs

Hi Guys,

I have commissioned many VSDs for ESP applications. I now wonder if the following is applicable:

The VSD1 is driving the ESP, I want to shift the power supply to the ESP from this VSD1 to another standby VSD2. Is this possible?

I know a similar application that synchronization panel is used when shifting from one diesel generator to another. Like this application, can we use VSDs as the place of generators ?

I think ESP here mean electrical submersible pumping - am I right ?
If your Drive (VFD / VSD) is designed / ratted for parallel operation then its possible.
More than 90% of the low cost drives don't support this feature in the Market.
Where as expensive ones support them. You may have to use line filterers on both the VFDs.
If Vector control is used, then paralleling is not recommended.

If not designed properly then failure rate of the IGBTs will be too high.
Other cheaper alternative is to switch the VFDs by using a Contractor i.e., at any given point of time only 1 Drive will be connected to the pump using mechanically interlocked Contractor. The down side of this design is there will be a momentary down time during switching.
