This was the first result found using my preferred Internet search engine with the term:

Thank you CSA, but I couldn't find the principle in any of the brochures. I just found the application and specifications.

 

The early IR scanners simply monitored the total IR load (for the given detector and optics), multibeam systems look at several bands.

you can distinguish the IR load by the refractory from that of the process gases and further separate out the load from the flame or combustion front.

The early applications for example would use IT and UV to accomplish the same result. The UV scanner in the case of mixed hydrocarbons monitored hydrogen combustion.
