For most control system vendors and technicians and engineers, a 'trip' refers to an emergency shutdown in which the energy input to the prime mover (turbine; reciprocating engine; etc.) is very quickly stopped.
Some control system vendors and technicians and engineers use 'trip' to refer to a normal shutdown, in which the energy input to the prime mover is automatically and gradually reduced in a controlled fashion to reduce the load on the unit and remove it from service.
So, understanding the context of usage is very important.
