Wenglor Shrinks Ultrasonic Sensing With New U1KM Sensor Series
Detect objects up to 3 meters away with Wenglor's compact U1KM ultrasonic sensor featuring MEMS technology, IO-Link, and multi-object detection.
Wenglor has expanded its ultrasonic sensing portfolio with the compact U1KM series, combining a 3-meter sensing range, MEMS transducer technology, and IO-Link communication in a miniature housing. Designed for applications where installation space is limited, the sensors provide reliable object detection and distance measurement across a wide variety of materials. Features including multi-object detection, synchronized operation, and remote diagnostics make the U1KM well suited for packaging, logistics, robotics, and machine automation.

The U1KM series is ideal for logistics, packaging, and machinery applications that require reliable object detection across a variety of materials. The sensors combine long-range ultrasonic sensing, IO-Link communication, and MEMS transducer technology in a miniature housing while supporting the simultaneous detection of multiple objects.
Long Range in a Compact Housing
The U1KM provides a working range from 50 mm to 3,000 mm for object detection, with distance measurement beginning at 250 mm. Unlike optical sensors, the ultrasonic design detects transparent, reflective, dark, and irregularly shaped objects regardless of surface finish or ambient lighting conditions.

The U1KM will feature a miniature housing that allows the sensor to be adapted into almost any difficult area such as with robotic grippers, conveyor systems, and packaging equipment where larger ultrasonic sensors may not fit. Typical applications include pallet detection, fill-level monitoring, stack height measurement, and presence detection.
Designed for Multi-Sensor Installations
The U1KM supports IO-Link 1.1, which allows engineers or integrators to configure sensor settings, view diagnostic information, and monitor detected objects without needing to be directly at the device. They can also use IO-Link to provide immediate feedback during setup, making it easier to verify detection zones and confirm that the sensor is working properly even from a remote location.

For applications that may require multiple sensors, the U1KM supports both multiplex and synchronous operation to minimize interference when sensors are mounted too close together. The sensor can detect up to five objects simultaneously, allowing a single device to monitor more complex applications such as material handling, packaging, and conveyor systems while reducing the number of sensors required.
MEMS Technology Improves Stability
The U1KM uses a MEMS ultrasonic transducer to improve electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) while maintaining stable sensing performance in harsh industrial environments. The series carries an IP62 protection rating and is available with PNP, NPN, or antivalent PNP switching outputs through an M8 four-pin connector, making it compatible with a range of machine control systems.
With the U1KM series, Wenglor is expanding its ultrasonic sensor portfolio with a compact model that offers sensing distances of up to 3 meters. The combination of long-range detection, IO-Link communication, and a miniature housing makes the sensors suitable for object detection, distance measurement, and material handling applications where installation space is limited.
