In reply to RK Sastry: What you've described is I think more closely related to "augmented virtual reality". Although in this case, it has more "reality" and less "virtual". It also has some resemblance to remotely guided vehicle systems.
That's about as far as I would care to speculate on it. I wouldn't be surprised though if someone at some university has created a system that as an experiment.
