ABB Commissions New Control System Package for Tan Thang Cement in Vietnam

November 10, 2020 by Sara McCaslin

An ABB control system package comprised of the Ability System 800xA DCS, Ability Knowledge Manager, and Ability Expert Optimizer has been fully commissioned at Vietnamese cement plant Tan Thang Cement.

Vietnam is one of the world’s foremost cement producers, so it should come as no surprise that one of their cement plants, Tan Thang Cement, would be interested in modernizing a new greenfield plant.

Tan Thang Cement

Tan Thang Cement’s new greenfield site, located in the Nghe An province, predicts that the ABB control system package will support operational efficiency and achieve a reliable electrical supply across their entire cement production process. This particular plant is expected to produce 2 million tons of cement a year, contributing significantly to the 100 million tons already produced in Vietnam annually.

With this technology now in place, Tan Thang Cement’s newest plant is the most modern in the region with Industry 4.0 technology. Its integrated electrical, control, and communication systems expect to operate both profitably and efficiently.

ABB Control System Package

ABB and Tan Thang Cement worked closely to configure and commission a control, integration, and automation solution based on the ABB Ability package.

This included the ABB Ability System 800xA DCS (Distributed Control System), responsible for integrated electrical, control, and communication systems. This integration aims to provide more visibility into processes so that Tan Thang Cement can make more efficient use of energy and raw materials while keeping production stable.

The ABB Ability Knowledge Manager provides production planning, maintenance, material movement, and quality information so that users will have analytical insight and visualized data. This can improve the overall operation of the cement plant and aid in identifying best practices.

It also makes critical data relevant to accessible users via the web and mobile interfaces.

The ABB Ability Expert Optimizer uses the latest in process control technologies to manage mills, blending, kilns, and alternative fuels so that operating costs are minimized, and yield is maximized.

It provides needed control and stabilization and includes advanced process techniques such as fuzzy logic, model predictive control, and artificial neural networks.

ABB Offering Vital Components to Plant

In addition to the control system package, ABB also provided vital components such as:

  • A 110kV air-insulated substation complete with a SCADA system based on the ABB Ability System 800xA for Power Control
  • The intelligent motor control center
  • High voltage primary and secondary equipment (for support of electrical infrastructure)
  • Power and distribution transformers
  • Emergency diesel generator
  • Auxiliary control center
  • DC power supply

The entire commission process was completed within Tan Thang Cement’s timetable and included remote assistance and full training for the plant staff.

ABB Ability System 800xA DCS, Ability Knowledge Manager, and Ability Expert Optimizer make for a promising start to Tan Thang Cement’s newest plant. The ABB Ability package’s expected benefits include lowered fuel conception, better process control, and increased output, all without compromising quality.
