ABB Introduces Outdoor-Rated Drives for Harsh Environments

New IP66 and UL Type 4X motor drives from ABB withstand dust, water, and corrosive environments without requiring protective enclosures.

Motor drives operating outdoors or in corrosive industrial environments often require costly protective enclosures that add complexity and maintenance requirements. ABB’s latest expansion of its ACS580, ACH580, and ACQ580 drive families addresses that challenge with IP66 and UL Type 4X-rated models designed to withstand dust, water, chemicals, and extreme weather conditions. The ruggedized drives combine durability with energy-efficient performance, remote connectivity, and application-specific functionality for manufacturing, HVAC, and water treatment systems.

Ruggedized Design

ABB’s approach was to make the motor drives themselves more rugged rather than requiring the end user to buy or design a specialized housing to protect a more sensitive motor drive. Fewer failure points, a smaller physical footprint, and less design work are required. These motor drives meet two rigorous industrial standards for surviving harsh environments.

Ingress Protection 66 means that devices are dust-tight and can withstand powerful water jets, though they cannot be fully submerged. By IP standards, these motor drives are appropriate for outdoor use, withstanding extreme heat and cold, as well as heavy rain, ice, blowing dust, and other conditions that many motor drives cannot withstand.

UL Type 4X certification repeats some of the same tests, but also calls out chemical resistance. Salt spray and harsh chemicals in the nearby environment can quickly ruin unprotected motor controllers due to spray, drips, or vapor deposition on cooler surfaces. ABB’s newest controllers are less susceptible to chemical attack because they are designed to meet UL Type 4X certification.

Efficiency and Connectivity

In addition to extended lifetime and improved reliability in harsh environments, these motor controllers offer several other advantages. They can be up to 25% more efficient than conventional drives, giving them an economic advantage in continuous-use applications.

They also have an optional Bluetooth-connected control panel, meaning plant personnel can monitor and control equipment remotely. This can improve response speed; engineers may not have to walk out to the device to change settings. This feature also enhances safety; plant personnel can monitor and control the device from farther away, which could be outside of an arc flash zone, away from potential chemical exposure and other such hazards. Consider a motor used in a hazardous environment; the remote-mounted panel significantly enhances safety.

Potential Applications

The catalog expansion for the IP66 / UL Type 4X includes three separate product lines. The first, the ACS580, is a general-purpose model that can run motors in many applications, from conveyors to pumps. They see broad use across virtually all manufacturing and industrial applications. For more specialized HVACR applications, the ACH580 has been optimized for air handling and HVAC. Fans, baffle controls, and numerous other HVAC hardware can be actuated using these drives. The third product family is the ACQ580, used in water and wastewater handling applications. Wastewater applications, in particular, expose equipment to corrosive environments, salt spray, cleaning agents, and other contaminants, making the IP66/UL Type 4X-rated version a welcome addition.
