ABB Launches New Range of Pressure Transmitters for Industrial Applications

July 13, 2020 by Alessandro Mascellino

ABB released the PxS100 range of pressure transmitters, developed for various industrial applications.

The components are designed to “meet key requirements in most manufacturing and production industries”. Commenting on the news in a press release, ABB confirmed the novel range will fulfill all routine requirements for pressure measurement in the industrial sector.

Pressure Transmitters: An Overview

Essentially, pressure transmitters are transducers that convert pressure into an analog electrical signal. This is done through a three-part process installation in which a pressure guiding tube is laid, followed by an electrical signal cable, and finally by the installation of the differential pressure transmitter.

While operating, the pressure of the medium is transferred to the central measuring diaphragm, through the isolating diaphragm and the silicone oil. The pressure difference from the double-sided pressure guiding tube is received on the double-sided isolating diaphragm, where the membrane is then measured.

Pressure transmitters are typically used in a variety of sectors, from water and wastewater to metals, mining, pulp and paper, cement, and power ancillary. These are sectors in which ruggedness is often required for the components not to be damaged during their lifecycle.

Improving Transmitters Durability

Housed in a stainless-steel housing, the PxS100 range is built for such harsh scenarios, offering IP66, IP67, IP68 and IP69K protection for operability in high humidity or dust environments.

The components’ ingress protection also makes them suitable for clean-in-place applications in the food and beverage sector. Following the specifications requested by its reference market, ABB built the PxS100 to provide a base accuracy of 0.25% of span, with the option of improvement to 0.1%.

The new range is available in both Gauge and Absolute sensor variants and thanks to its 10:1 turn-down capability and full rangeability, offers five different measurement ranges from 40 mbar (16in H2O) up to 100 bar (1450 psi).

The PxS100 series also features abrasive resistant capabilities to protect the metallic diaphragm and extend working life, as well as an ABB’s H-shield to safeguard from monatomic hydrogen damage and ensure measurement accuracy.

PxS100: Main Features

The PxS100 range comprises rugged and resilient transmitters, but that does not detract from the practical aspects of these components. In fact, these devices are easy to configure thanks to the use of QR code technology allowing for easy access to online operational instructions and advice.

It also features an HMI that allows the component to rotate for visibility from any angle (‘through the glass’ configuration) and can be ordered with easily accessible backlight for low light environments.

“The PxS100 range offers abundant features and functionality in a flexible and adaptable design that is easy to configure and quickly available,” said Eugenio Volonterio, Global Product Line Manager for Pressure Products at ABB. The executive also explained how the new series is designed for general applications and sits alongside the more specialized 266 series which is intended for more specific uses.

In terms of compatibility with existing components, ABB said the news series is suitable for deployment with a variety of the company’s range of adaptable connectors and flanges. Through them, the PxS100 series can be easily deployed to accommodate hundreds of mountings, spans, and certification-equivalent options.
