Aspen Technology Focuses on Embedding Industrial AI Throughout Their Supply Chain

May 27, 2021 by Alessandro Mascellino

Asset optimization software company, AspenTech, has announced the expansion of its industrial artificial intelligence (AI) portfolio.

The move is aimed at enabling companies to achieve higher levels of profitability and sustainability.

As part of AspenTech’s portfolio expansion, the company’s Industrial AI Workbench will empower data scientists and engineers to collaborate further with domain experts to create AI apps based on enterprise-wide data.

Expanding Industrial AI Applications

By applying First Principles Driven Hybrid Models, AI is directly embedded into the Aspen HYSYS (Hyprotech and Systems) and Aspen Plus process simulations.

This enables engineers to build operations-ready models. These models are calibrated with relevant plant data and shared across engineering, planning, and dynamic optimization teams to improve the applications’ accuracy and predictability.

"The use of First Principles Models acting as guardrails for the use of AI in industrial markets is key for success," commented Peter Reynolds, Principal Analyst with ARC Advisory Group.

These models cover a broad range of operating conditions, offering advanced capabilities to improve general productivity.

“Using the hybrid model, we were able to create a model that can reproduce real plant data more accurately than the conventional reformer model,” explained Mr. Takuto Nakai, Production Department at Nissan Chemical Corporation.

aspenONE V12.1

The aspenONE V12.1 introduces models allowing customers to perform biomass processing, hydrogen production, carbon capture, and carbon emissions more accurately and systematically. This may reduce environmental impact.

The software also offers new analysis and visualization tools to help reduce measurable waste and energy use further across the whole production chain.

The aspenONE V12.1 comprises several different solutions. These solutions include the Aspen Deep Learning tool for DMC3 that combines linear and nonlinear (deep learning) control variables and the Aspen OptiPlant and OptiRouter to automatically generate 3D layouts for design purposes.

The latest version of aspenONE also offers Aspen Unscrambler and Aspen Process Plus capabilities to accelerate product development and ensure product quality for pharmaceutical companies.

Boosting Sustainability

The wide range of aspenONE’s new features and capabilities are designed to deliver higher levels of profitability and sustainability with Industrial AI, according to Janice Abel, the Principal Analyst with ARC Advisory Group.

“The deep domain expertise embedded into the AspenTech V12.1 products and its focus on embedding Industrial AI from design through the entire supply chain offers a powerful solution that will help unlock the untapped business value in industrial data,” Abel explained.

In addition, the expansion of AspenTech’s Industrial AI portfolio specifically aims to foster greater efficiency of automation across engineering, operations, and maintenance and to progress the company’s vision of the Self-Optimizing Plant.

aspenONE V12.1 is designed to meet these needs by further improving margins, asset uptime, and reliability, as well as maximizing utilization of assets.

“The combination of industry-specific application knowledge and asset optimization expertise gives AspenTech customers the assurance that their AI initiatives will yield safe, reliable, and efficient operations,” Arbeitel concluded.
