Pepperl+Fuchs Adds Capacitive Touch Function to IO-Link Signal Cap

Pepperl+Fuchs has introduced a compact IO-Link signal light cap with touch functionality that enables local operator feedback to a traditionally diagnostic-only signaling device.

Pepperl+Fuchs has released a new IO-Link signal light cap that combines multicolor LED signaling, a built-in acoustic alarm, and an optional touch feature in a small design. Made for industrial automation, this device expands the company’s IO-Link signaling range and allows operators to interact directly with machines while also providing status updates and digital diagnostics.

Compact Design for Space-Constrained Machines

One key feature of the new ICA-SB-MCST signaling device is its small size. At only 55 mm in diameter, the signal light cap fits well in places with limited space. It works well for robotics end effectors, assembly stations, and modular production equipment where saving space is critical.

Even though it is small, the device offers an optional touch feature for quick and clear machine status updates. Its multicolor LED can illuminate in over a million colors for custom selection, or in one of eight pre-set color options. Users can set up lighting patterns and behaviors using the IO-Link interface, helping machine builders keep visual signals consistent across different production lines.

Besides visual signals, the new signal light cap has a built-in multi-tone alarm with 10 tone options and an 85 dB sound level. The mix of customizable lights and sounds helps operators tell different machine events, production states, and maintenance needs apart using custom profiles. While its sound is not as loud as Pepperl+Fuchs’ larger IO-Link signal tower, which reaches 105 dB, it is still suitable for many machine-level uses where local alerts are enough.

 

IO-Link Enables Smarter Diagnostics

The new signal light cap uses an IO-Link V1.1 interface that supports COM3 communication and Class A ports, enabling continuous digital communication with the control system. This helps with predictive maintenance by providing constant updates on device status and conditions.

Unlike traditional stack lights that require separate outputs for each color, IO-Link allows two-way communication between the device and an IO-Link master. Users can exchange information such as diagnostics, status, parameter storage, and event alerts. The IO-Link strategy also simplifies transferring settings if the device is replaced, saving time and reducing extra setup.

Applications Across Industrial Automation

Pepperl+Fuchs’ signal light cap is designed for many uses, namely those where local signals and operator input share high importance. In automotive skid positioning, it can show the position status and let operators confirm completed tasks right from the device using the touch feature. For robotics end effectors or packaging machines, local signals help technicians quickly check machine conditions without needing to look at a central HMI.

As more manufacturers adopt Industry 4.0 systems, connected devices like the new IO-Link signal light cap offer valuable operational data in addition to their main signaling functions. By combining compact industrial signaling, touch-based operator interaction, configurable LED colors, acoustic notifications, and digital communication, the signal light cap is a potential solution for machine builders and plant operators looking to create more connected, responsive, and maintainable signaling systems.
