Balluff Launches Compact SmartLight Rigid Signal Light
New SmartLight Rigid from Balluff offers glare-free illumination, slim design, and flexible signalling in tight spaces.
Balluff has introduced the SmartLight Rigid, a slim industrial signal light designed for machines and systems with limited space but essential visibility. Measuring just 20 mm in diameter, the device combines status indication and illumination in a compact form factor. With 180° glare-free visibility, IO-Link connectivity, and multiple signaling effects, SmartLight Rigid supports the growing shift toward distributed, intelligent machine feedback in modern automation environments.

Compact Design for Space Constraint Systems
The SmartLight Rigid measures just 20 mm in diameter, so it’s much smaller than traditional stack lights. Its size allows users to install it directly on machines, inside enclosures, or throughout a system. Instead of relying on a central tower, engineers can place several units near key areas for clear, local status updates. This is especially helpful in complex or modular automation setups.
High Visibility and Glare-Free Signaling
Even though it’s small, the SmartLight Rigid is easy to see. Its 180° signal makes the machine status visible from many angles. The diffuse lighting prevents glare and gives even illumination, helping operators avoid eye strain and making signals easier to read. The steady light also avoids problems that come with point-source LEDs.

The SmartLight Rigid is available in several versions, including the BNI00LU and BNI00LP models, as well as other options. It uses an M12 5-pin connector and works with a single light segment. Features like blinking and sparkle effects add flexibility to how signals are shown.
Flexible Control with IO-Link Integration
A key feature of the SmartLight Rigid is its support for IO-Link 1.1.4, which makes it easy to connect to modern industrial networks. With IO-Link, users can adjust settings like brightness and signaling modes. The device offers dimming, flashing, and strobe effects to meet different needs. For systems without IO-Link, brightness can still be adjusted using an external dimmer or a PWM device. This dual control makes the SmartLight Rigid work well in both older and modern automation setups.
Durable Design and Aesthetic Consideration
The SmartLight Rigid features a durable anodized aluminum housing that also enhances heat dissipation. It operates from -20 to 50 °C and has an IP54 rating for protection against water splashes and dust. For global industrial use, it is certified to CE and UL standards.
The SmartLight Rigid has a clean, modern look with invisible LED dots that create a continuous light effect. This gives machines and workstations a smooth, uniform glow. This focus on design reflects a trend in industrial equipment where looks and visual clarity are becoming as important as technical performance.
Moving Towards Distributed, Intelligent Signaling
As industrial systems adopt more modular and space-saving designs, signaling methods are changing too. Large central signal towers are being replaced by compact, distributed indicators that give local, context-specific feedback. The SmartLight Rigid fits this trend, offering a flexible, small-footprint solution that integrates easily with modern automation. With its high visibility, customizable controls, and compact size, it is a strong choice for today’s industrial signal lighting needs.
